OTD in 2015—Police, citizen aid workers say they want to meet with Tab Tricolore

February 12, 2025 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

FCSW President Gareth ShepherdMembers of several branches of The Park’s police force and a number of citizen aid and action organizations have expressed an interest in meeting with Tab Tricolore, the renowned chef, restaurateur, and award-winning author who returned to The Park in December, three weeks after being abducted outside The Park.

“We are seeking information in a few key areas, particularly information that relates to certain groups of individuals who live outside The Park and we feel that Tab could be immensely helpful to us in that regard,” says Gareth Shepherd, a 18-year veteran of the force and president of the Federation of Canine Security Workers (FCSW).

Inspector Maurice Addax of the Specist and Hate Crimes Unit and Inspector Antonia T. Fossa of the Interspecial Investigations Unit also said they plan to request a meeting with Tricolore “at his convenience.”

“It’s entirely up to him, of course, but we would very much appreciate the opportunity to ask him a few questions,” Fossa says.

No official police representative has been in touch directly with Tricolore yet, however, Fossa said.

Also interested in meeting with the chef are members of a number of The Park’s immigrant and refugee aid organizations and other Animal associations.

“We want to find out, to the extent that it is possible, whether his [Tab’s] stripes had anything to do with his disappearance,” says Aiofe Badger, who is president of the Sisters and  Brothers of the Narrow Band.

Keeva Moffatt, president of The Park’s Spotted Skunk Sedan Patrol says her group would also like to meet with Tab.

“If he was abducted because he is a tabby, this could affect us, too, in the future,” she says.

Other groups, including Home to Roost and Runaway Rovers say they would like to have a general meeting with the chef to share their joint knowledge and experience.

Tricolore was abducted on December 2, on one of his regular trips outside The Park to source ingredients for his fine dining restaurant, Klo. He returned on December 25, but the usually bombastic  and outspoken Feline has kept a low profile ever since.

OTD in 2014—Police impose curfew, ban on travel amid protests and disappearances

December 7, 2024 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

FCSW President Gareth Shepherd

Gareth Shepherd: curfew, ban on travel outside The Park

DEVELOPING STORY
After an overnight series of consultations with the Archons and the Department of Well-Being and Safety, Park Police announced today that they have imposed a curfew on Park residents and a ban on travel outside The Park.

Gareth Shepherd, a 17-year veteran of the force and president of the Federation of Canine Security Workers (FCSW), made the announcement this morning at a hastily-arranged press conference.

The announcement read as follows:

Due to recent events, including violent protests, threats on the lives of Park Animals, and a number of mysterious disappearances, the Archons and the Park Police have made the decision to impose order on The Park by establishing a 10:00 p.m. curfew on all residents, as well as a ban on travel outside The Park.

More details of these arrangements will be made public shortly. For now, please be advised that officers will be permanently stationed at all Park exits and will begin making rounds at 9:50 this evening.

Park Police and the Archons are appealing to all residents to respect this decision. It was made with the welfare of all in mind.

Shepherd also confirmed that they have enlisted the assistance of the Does of Peace in this effort.

The new restrictions come into effect tonight, December 8, 2014.

This story will be updated as more information is gathered.

OTD in 2014—Data Retrievers: Meet Park Police’s new partners in Tree hacking investigation

June 3, 2024 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

Data RetrieversPark Police announced today that they have partnered with a private firm of data Retrievers to aid them in their investigation into April’s Data Tree hacking.

At a press conference held this morning, Inspector Antonia T. Fossa of the Interspecial Investigations Unit (IIU) confirmed that Park Police have engaged the services of AROO, a private data retrieval company, in the hopes of locating some of the data lost when the Tree was hacked.

“These are skilled data Retrievers,” Fossa said. “It is our hope that they will be able to sniff out some of the Tree’s lost data.”

Fossa stressed that this is an independent investigation and not connected to the one in which Police are already engaged.

“Whether or not we are ever able to ascertain the perpetrator of the crime and whether or not we are then able to bring that perpetrator to justice, we need to try to find the lost data. AROO has a solid history in data retrieval and we are confident that our partnership with them will bring results,” she said.

Some observers, though skeptical of the plan, point to The Park’s limitations when it comes to prosecuting Humans and others who live outside The Park. According to the Ant Security and Intelligence Service (ASIS), Humans may, indeed, be responsible for the Tree hacking.

“As I have said in the past, it does not lie within our jurisdiction to prosecute Humans who reside outside The Park,” explained Fionnula L. Fox, professor of law at the University of West Terrier and a specialist in extra-hortulanial law (law that applies outside The Park).

“For this reason, I applaud Park Police for making an effort to rectify the damage done in concert with attempting to find the perpetrator,” she said.

Sierpinski Squirrel said he was “cautiously optimistic” when informed of the plan. The Chief Financial Officer of A. Corn and Partners stands to gain the most from this new partnership, as his company stored the major part of its data in the Oak Tree that was hacked.

OTD in 2016—Photos of Park Animals in hibernation “very disturbing,” say police, DWBS

January 24, 2024 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

The emergence of a cache of photos that show Park Animals in various stages of hibernation is “very disturbing,” say Park Police and the Department of Well-Being and Safety (DWBS).

The photos, which likely were taken by cameras installed secretly—and illegally— in hibernators’ burrows, were posted last night on the gossip web site headsNtales.

PotWatcher, The Park’s foremost web-watching organization says the pictures appeared “without fanfare and without any mention of their provenance or their authenticity.”

“They appeared serially, about one every half-hour,” says Rufus Gordon Gaupe, President and CEO of PotWatcher.

Not surprisingly, the photos have gone viral despite a police order that headsNtales remove them from the site.

Cornelius Kakapo, DWBS Director of Public Relations, confirmed the department was notified after Gaupe reported the postings to police.

“To me, it’s not just a breach of privacy; it’s a breach of trust and a threat to interspecial harmony,” Gaupe told The Mammalian Daily.

Park police agree with Gaupe and are initiated a “full investigation” that includes staff from the Specist and Hate Crimes Unit (SHCU) and the Interspecial Investigations Unit. They have also set up a special hotline and are appealing to all Animals who think they might have seen anything related to the crimes or who know any Animal who might be involved.

“We want to talk to any Animal who has any ideas about this,” says SHCU Chief Inspector Maurice Addax.

The Park Police Hotline number is: 226-887-4277.

On This Day—October 27, 2014: Police to bring in reinforcements for today’s Account of the State of The Park

October 27, 2023 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

FCSW President Gareth ShepherdMammalian Daily Exclusive

A source close to Park Police has confirmed to The Mammalian Daily that our collective policing and peacekeeping forces are gearing up for what could be a major disruption this afternoon, when the Archons and The Park Finance Office deliver their annual Account of the State of the Park.

In a communication dated October 26, the source cited what she referred to as “troop movements,” meaning that various police and peacekeeping groups were readying themselves for the possibility of dealing with discontent and violence at the Account. That discontent, in large part due to the unpopularity of the 2015 budget, could boil over and become dangerously violent.

For that reason, the Does of Peace, The Park’s newest peacekeeping group, have invited the few Doves of Peace who have remained in The Park to join them at the event. Also called in, according to our source, were Guard Dog reservists and retired members of the Ant Security and Intelligence Service (ASIS).

“The mission is to keep the peace,” said the source’s communication. “Animals will be free to express themselves verbally but not physically and the ‘No Biting’ rule will be maintained by all members of the police force.”

Park Police had no comment when contacted regarding the event.

On This Day—September 9, 2014: Data Tree hacking: Police issue update

September 9, 2023 By Imko Oaljefanta, TMD Archivist

tree hacked

At a press conference this morning, Chief Inspector Maurice Addax of the Park Police’s Specist and Hate Crimes Unit (SHCU) issued an update on the April hacking of one of The Park’s largest Data Trees.

Flanked by Inspector Antonia T. Fossa of the Interspecial Investigations Unit (IIU) and C. Astrid H. Ant, Head of The Park’s Ant Security and Intelligence Service (ASIS), Addax confirmed that data Retrievers working for the private firm AROO had recovered enough data to confirm that Humans were involved in the hacking.

“The data, in combination with the debris that was recovered from the site by my team, confirm beyond any doubt that Humans were the perpetrators of the crime,” the ASIS head told reporters.

Also in attendance at the press event was Sierpinski Squirrel, Chief Financial Officer of A. Corn and Partners. The Squirrel’s firm stored most of their data in the Tree, which is believed to be more than 70 years old.

“They [the data Retrievers] were able to retrieve much of our client data and for that we are extremely grateful, but this has been a very challenging few months for us and for our customers,” the Squirrel said after the press conference.

When asked whether the investigation was now considered closed, Addax admitted that options were limited, but denied that Police had formally closed the investigation.

“No, we consider the investigation to still be open, but the sad fact is that we have no control over Humans. We cannot prosecute them, either inside or outside The Park and we cannot recover damages from them. Our only options are to try and prevent such things from happening again and to that end, we are working to develop new security policies. The investigation will remain open until we have these policies in place,” he said.

No-biting rule suspended for police at Saturday’s Return of the Nut: gossip site

February 18, 2016 By Fiona Lupu, TMD Events Reporter

DEVELOPING STORY

The Department of Well-Being and Safety (DWBS) has agreed to suspend the longstanding no-biting rule for Park Police who are on duty at Sunday’s Return of the Nut ceremonies, according to the gossip site headsNtales.

In a post dated this afternoon, the site’s co-founder Hortencia Guacamayo says a source told her the decision was made in consultation with the Archons and the Park Police Force.

The source cited “the recent outbreak of violence at the celebration of the birth of The Park’s first leader, in combination with a generally volatile environment” as the reasons for the change in the longstanding policy that forbids police officers from biting alleged offenders.

According to the site, it was the Federation of Canine Security Workers (FCSW) that requested the change in policy which, it says, will be in effect from ten in the morning on Sunday, February 21 until two in the morning on Monday, February 22.

No comment has been made thus far by the DWBS or by the FCSW regarding the matter. A Mammalian Daily request for more  information from the Office of the Archons remained unanswered at the time of this article’s publication.

Fowl Ball face-off: Police to be stationed outside grooming houses this Sunday

May 27, 2015 By Marikit Kuneho, TMD Park Life Reporter

FCSW President Gareth Shepherd

Grooming houses to have police stationed outside on Sunday

Park Police have decided to station at least one officer outside each of The Park’s grooming houses on Sunday, May 31, the day of the second annual Fowl Ball.

The decision was announced this afternoon in the following communiqué:

“In an effort to prevent a repeat of last year’s difficulties, and after consultation with the Archons and with the Department of Well-Being and Safety (DWBS), Park Police have taken the decision to station at least one officer outside each grooming house during the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.”

Grooming house owners were swift to react to the communiqué.

“This is outrageous,” said Tano Pagun, co-owner of The Pluming Room.

“I don’t understand why they consulted with the Archons and the DWBS, but they didn’t consult with us,” said Tallulah, owner of Tallulah’s Toilettage, the grooming house at which 68 Animals were injured in last Spring’s “stampede.”

“We don’t want police at our door,” she said. “We have businesses to run and our clients are not going to feel comfortable with this situation.”

Amoltrud Poedel, owner of Amoltrud’s Aesthetics, echoed that sentiment and went even further:

“We dealt with this ourselves, subsequent to the disaster last year, in an open and honest fashion. We worked with PASS [Park Asssociation of Shops and Services), held public consultations, and announced our findings along with our report. We had no problems during the Park Interspecial Film Festival (PIFF) and, up until now, we considered the matter closed,” she said.

Wellington Whistlepig, current PASS President, agrees.

“We worked with the grooming houses, before and after the report was released, to make sure they had adequate resources and employees for big events such as this. I see no reason to involve the police ahead of time and, quite frankly, as an Animal in business, I am offended by this aggressive move,” he said.
